Insurance

Ship Station Auto Transport is a licensed vehicle transportation broker. We do not transport vehicles ourselves. Every shipment is dispatched through a network of licensed, bonded and insured motor carriers. Coverage for your vehicle while in transit is provided by the cargo insurance policy of the specific carrier assigned to your shipment.
Carrier-provided coverage
Your vehicle is covered under the cargo insurance policy maintained by the carrier that physically transports your vehicle. Ship Station Auto Transport verifies that each dispatched carrier carries a minimum of $2,000,000 in cargo insurance and holds the required operating authority before assignment.
The carrier's policy terms, limits, deductibles and exclusions determine the coverage available for your shipment. We will provide the carrier's insurance information, including the policy number and insurance provider, upon request after a carrier has been assigned.
What Ship Station Auto Transport does not insure
Ship Station Auto Transport is not an insurance company and does not issue, sell or underwrite cargo insurance. We are not liable for damage caused by the carrier, road conditions, weather, acts of God, or other events outside of our control. Our role is to arrange transport with qualified carriers and to assist you with the claims process when necessary.
Filing a damage or loss claim
If your vehicle is damaged or lost while in transit, the claim must be filed directly with the carrier named on the Bill of Lading. The Bill of Lading is the contract between you and the carrier and will identify the carrier responsible for the shipment.
- Inspect the vehicle thoroughly at delivery before signing the Bill of Lading.
- Note any new damage, missing items or discrepancies on the Bill of Lading at the time of delivery.
- Take clear photos of the damage from multiple angles, including wide shots and close-ups.
- Report the damage to us immediately so we can help you contact the carrier and start the claim.
- File the claim with the carrier's insurance provider as soon as possible. Most carriers require notification within 24 to 48 hours of delivery.
Ship Station Auto Transport will help coordinate communication between you and the carrier, but we cannot approve, deny or pay insurance claims on the carrier's behalf.
Carrier credentials and verification
Before dispatching any shipment, we verify that the assigned carrier is properly registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), holds active operating authority, and maintains valid cargo insurance. You may request a copy of the carrier's insurance certificate after assignment.
Personal belongings and loose items
Personal belongings left inside the vehicle are not covered by the carrier's cargo insurance. Carriers generally allow up to 100 lbs of items in the trunk, but these items travel at your own risk. Remove valuables, electronics, important documents and any loose items before pickup.
Pre-existing damage and condition reports
The carrier will inspect your vehicle at pickup and record its condition on the Bill of Lading. Any damage noted at delivery must be compared against this report. Claims for pre-existing damage or damage not documented at delivery are typically denied by the carrier's insurer.
Limitations and exclusions
Coverage and claim outcomes are governed by the assigned carrier's insurance policy. Common exclusions include damage caused by improper vehicle preparation, undisclosed inoperable condition, loose or aftermarket parts, personal belongings inside the vehicle, and damage not documented on the Bill of Lading at delivery.
If a carrier's insurance denies a claim for a valid reason under its policy terms, Ship Station Auto Transport is not responsible for the denial or for any resulting loss.
Questions about insurance
If you have questions about coverage for your specific shipment, contact us and we will provide the carrier's insurance details after assignment. For additional protection, you may also purchase a separate third-party cargo insurance policy at your own expense.
